Etymological Meaning of Devil

The most striking illustration of this process is to be found in the word devil itself: To a reader unfamiliar with the endless tricks which language delights in playing, it may seem shocking to be told that the Gypsies use the word devil as the name of God.[96]

This, however, is not because these people have made the archfiend an object of worship, but because the Gypsy language, descending directly from the Sanskrit, has retained in its primitive exalted sense a word which the English language has received only in its debased and perverted sense. The Teutonic words devil, teufel, diuval, djofull, djevful, may all be traced back to the Zend dev,[97] a name in which is implicitly contained the record of the oldest monotheistic revolution known to history. The influence of the so-called Zoroastrian reform upon the long-subsequent development of Christianity will receive further notice in the course of this paper; for the present it is enough to know that it furnished for all Christendom the name by which it designates the author of evil.

To the Parsee follower of Zarathustra the name of the Devil has very nearly the same signification as to the Christian; yet, as Grimm has shown, it is nothing else than a corruption of deva, the Sanskrit name for God. When Zarathustra overthrew the primeval Aryan nature-worship in Bactria, this name met the same evil fate which in early Christian times overtook the word demon, and from a symbol of reverence became henceforth a symbol of detestation.[98] But throughout the rest of the Aryan world it achieved a nobler career, producing the Greek theos, the Lithuanian diewas, the Latin deus, and hence the modern French Dieu, all meaning God.

If we trace back this remarkable word to its primitive source in that once lost but now partially recovered mother-tongue from which all our Aryan languages are descended, we find a root div or dyu, meaning "to shine." From the first-mentioned form comes deva, with its numerous progeny of good and evil appellatives; from the latter is derived the name of Dyaus, with its brethren, Zeus and Jupiter. In Sanskrit dyu, as a noun, means "sky" and "day"; and there are many passages in the Rig-Veda where the character of the god Dyaus, as the personification of the sky or the brightness of the ethereal heavens, is unmistakably apparent.

This key unlocks for us one of the secrets of Greek mythology. So long as there was for Zeus no better etymology than that which assigned it to the root zen, "to live,"[99] there was little hope of understanding the nature of Zeus. But when we learn that Zeus is identical with Dyaus, the bright sky, we are enabled to understand Horace's expression, "sub Jove frigido," and the prayer of the Athenians, "Rain, rain, dear Zeus, on the land of the Athenians, and on the fields."[100]

Such expressions as these were retained by the Greeks and Romans long after they had forgotten that their supreme deity was once the sky. Yet even the Brahman, from whose mind the physical significance of the god's name never wholly disappeared, could speak of him as Father Dyaus, the great Pitri, or ancestor of gods and men; and in this reverential name Dyaus pitar may be seen the exact equivalent of the Roman's Jupiter, or Jove the Father. The same root can be followed into Old German, where Zio is the god of day; and into Anglo-Saxon, where Tiwsdaeg, or the day of Zeus, is the ancestral form of Tuesday.

BRUSSEL - Waarschijnlijk zullen de EU-leiders, als ze vandaag in het Jeronimos-klooster in Lissabon bijeenkomen voor de plechtige ondertekening van het Hervormingsverdrag, wel even benauwd terugdenken aan een andere indrukwekkende locatie die ze ooit bezochten: het Romeinse Capitool. Daar zetten zij drie jaar geleden hun handtekening onder de Europese Grondwet, die vervolgens door de Fransen en de Nederlanders werd afgeschoten.

Met de ondertekening van het Hervormingsverdrag, een afgeslankte versie van de Grondwet, hopen de leiders definitief een einde te maken aan de identiteitscrisis die Europa overviel na het ‘nee’ van de Franse en Nederlandse burgers.

In Brussel werd na het afspringen van de Grondwet somber voorspeld dat de Europese Unie onbestuurbaar zou raken als gevolg van de uitbreiding met tien nieuwe landen, nog maar een paar maanden eerder. Zonder de Grondwet zou het hele besluitvormingsapparaat vast komen te zitten.

Maar in de praktijk blijkt er nauwelijks sprake te zijn geweest van een impasse. Volgens een onderzoek van professor Helen Wallace, een EU-expert van de London School of Economics, is het aantal keren dat het Europees Parlement al in eerste lezing akkoord ging met een wetsvoorstel flink toegenomen sinds 2003. Ook is het aantal wetsvoorstellen dat per jaar definitief wordt goedgekeurd, nauwelijks afgenomen. In 2003 waren het er 195, in 2006 ging het om 183 wetsvoorstellen. ‘De praktijk toont aan dat de institutionele processen binnen de EU vrij goed opgewassen bleken tegen het effect van de uitbreiding’, concludeert Wallace in haar studie.

Opvallend is ook dat de Europese Commissie nauwelijks minder actief is geworden na het nee tegen de Grondwet: in 2003 lanceerde de Commissie 491 wetsvoorstellen, niet veel meer dan vorig jaar. Toen waren het er bij elkaar 482.

Sinds het echec van de Grondwet heeft de Europese Commissie onder voorzitter José Manuel Barroso het accent wel verlegd. Geen grootscheepse Europese projecten meer, maar vooral consumentvriendelijke initiatieven, zoals de maatregel om de torenhoge tarieven voor mobiel bellen tussen de EU-landen naar beneden te krijgen. Ook de reuzenboetes die eurocommissaris Kroes links en rechts uitdeelt aan kartels en de milieuvoorstellen van de Commissie passen in die strategie.

Langzamerhand begint de Commissie haar vleugels weer verder uit te slaan. Zo lanceerde eurocommissaris Frattini (Justitie en Immigratie) dit najaar een voorstel voor een blue card, de Europese tegenhanger van de Amerikaanse green card, waarmee immigranten in de EU aan de slag zouden moeten kunnen gaan.

Vooral op het terrein van justitiële samenwerking moet het nieuwe Hervormingsverdrag de Europese Unie meer slagkracht geven. Het vetorecht komt op dit gebied te vervallen, zodat het makkelijker wordt besluiten te nemen. Ook krijgt de EU een permanente voorzitter, die maximaal vijf jaar kan aanblijven.

De bedoeling is dat de nieuwe voorzitter van de Raad (de vergadering van de EU-landen) voor meer continuïteit zal zorgen, maar bij de Commissie wordt met enige zorg naar de nieuwe constructie gekeken. ‘Als ze daarvoor iemand als ex-premier Blair aanwijzen, zal het Barroso nog moeilijk vallen onder diens schaduw uit te komen’, zegt een Commissiemedewerker.

Maar gaat het dit keer wel allemaal door?, zullen sommige leiders zich wel afvragen als ze vandaag hun handtekening zetten onder het document. Wat dat betreft ziet het er momenteel redelijk gunstig uit voor de pleitbezorgers van het Hervormingsverdrag, dat na de ondertekening verder het leven ingaat als het Verdrag van Lissabon.

De grootste brokkenmakers, Nederland en Frankrijk, hebben inmiddels besloten geen referendum te houden over de nieuwe tekst. Ook de Britse premier Gordon Brown is vastbesloten het verdrag niet aan de kiezer voor te leggen, ondanks alle druk van de Conservatieven. Volgens hem heeft Londen op zoveel terreinen een uitzonderingspositie weten te bedingen dat er niets wezenlijks aan de verhouding met Brussel verandert.

Deze week besloot ook Denemarken geen referendum te houden. Onder premier Anders Fogh Rasmussen beweegt het land dichter naar de Europese Unie toe. Hij vindt dat het tijd wordt de uitzonderingspositie die Denemarken op justitie- en defensieterrein heeft, ter discussie te stellen. Verder wil Rasmussen dat zijn land ook de euro invoert.

Ironisch genoeg is het juist het pro-Europese Ierland dat het grootste risico vormt. Dat land moet volgens de grondwet wel een referendum houden, maar de politieke leiders beginnen zich nu benauwd af te vragen hoe dat zal aflopen. Volgens de opiniepeilingen heeft het ja-kamp maar een kleine voorsprong op het nee-kamp, terwijl de meeste kiezers nog niet weten hoe ze zullen stemmen. Het zou voor Brussel wel erg bitter zijn als juist Ierland ook dit verdrag de nekslag toedient.

In de media blijft er gewoon sprake van een afgeslankt verdrag terwijl dat niet zo is. Het is meer verhuld in aanhangsels en directieven.Daar wordt door de mainstream media nooit over gesproken. Bovenstaand artikel is typisch voor de nederlandse media-kranten. Tendentieus.

En nu maar duimen voor de tegenstanders van het verdrag in Ierland. Dat moet kunnen lukken.
