Will Smith Explains Hitler

Will Smith is angry over celebrity gossip Web site articles that he said misinterpreted a recent remark he made in a Scottish newspaper about Adolf Hitler.

In a story published Saturday in the Daily Record, Smith was quoted saying: ,em>"Even Hitler didn't wake up going, 'let me do the most evil thing I can do today.' I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was 'good.'"

The quote was preceded by the writer's observation: "Remarkably, Will believes everyone is basically good."

Over the weekend, dozens of celebrity gossip Web sites posted articles about the comment, many saying that Smith believed that Hitler was a "good" person.

"It is an awful and disgusting lie," Smith said in a statement Monday provided by his publicist. "It speaks to the dangerous power of an ignorant person with a pen. I am incensed and infuriated to have to respond to such ludicrous misinterpretation."

"Adolf Hitler was a vile, heinous vicious killer responsible for one of the greatest acts of evil committed on this planet," read the statement.

Will Smith may have studied Scientology with pal Tom Cruise, but he says his faith rests in his own spirituality.

"I don't necessarily believe in organized religion," Smith, 39, said when asked about Scientology Friday at a junket for his upcoming film I Am Legend.

"I love my God, my higher power, but it is mine and mine alone, and I create my connection, and I decide how my connection is going to be," he added.

Describing himself as a "student of world religions," Smith — who was raised a Baptist — said: "I believe that my connection to my higher power is separate from everybody's."

"I don’t believe that the Muslims have all the answers and all the beliefs. I don’t believe the Christians have all the answers and beliefs, or that the Jews have all the answers."

Will Smith’s 7-year-old daughter Willow has an unlikely role model, the "I Am Legend" star recently told People. Smith’s daughter - who makes her big-screen debut in the thriller - wants to grow up to be like Paris Hilton!

Comparing his son Jaden, 8, who starred alongside his dad in last year’s “The Pursuit of Happyness,” with his daughter, Smith said “Jaden is (like) Johnny Depp. He just wants to do good work . . . He loves acting, he just wants to make good movies. And Willow is Paris Hilton. Willow wants to be on TV.”

Smith was sure to stress that the comparison to the socialite was a compliment, adding that their drive for success is similar. “You don’t work with Willow,” he laughed. “You work for Willow.”

Are Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith the latest celebs to join the Church of Scientology?

Smith, a friend of famous Scientologist Tom Cruise, tells Men's Vogue, "I've studied Buddhism and Hinduism, and I've studied Scientology through Tom [Cruise]."

A source tells Us Weekly that wife Jada, 36, is also intrigued by the religion, saying, "She's more gung-ho about Scientology than Will."

Smith, 39, who was raised Baptist, says in Vogue, "Ninety-eight percent of the principles [in Scientology] are identical to the principles of the Bible. . . . I don't think that because the word someone uses for spirit is 'thetan' that the definition becomes any different."

Smith's grandmother may disagree. Smith once said, "My grandmother would get up out of her casket [if I became a Scientologist]."
