Kate Hudson is to take the lead role in Big Eyes, a biopic of 1960s artist Margaret Keane.

Keane was famous for her drawings of children with large eyes, which were sold under the name of then-husband Walter. During their divorce proceedings, she was forced to paint in front of a judge to prove that the works were hers and gain the right to use her own name.

According to Variety, the independently-financed movie will focus on her "personal awakening" as a result of the feminist movement and the subsequent lawsuit over her artwork.

It will be directed by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski from their own script.

Hudson is currently promoting adventure film Fool's Gold, in which she stars with Matthew McConaughey. The pair have revealed that they had to flee from deadly jellyfish while shooting the movie in Australia.

Kate Hudson was so put off by her co-star Matthew McConaughey's natural odour she begged him to reconsider his no-deodorant stance for love scenes.

The movie hunk famously refuses to wear scents - something which his latest co-star found disgusting.

He reveals, "She always brings a salt rock, which is some natural deodorant, and says, 'Would you please put this on?' "I just never wore it. No cologne, no deodorant."

McConaughey insists Hudson is his only co-star who has ever complained about his smell, adding that a good diet and regular showers help him stay fresh.

He adds, "I take a few (showers) a day."

Kate Hudson has offered her ex-boyfriend Owen Wilson her love and support, following his reported suicide attempt in the summer.

The pair's split, and photographs of Hudson with actor Dax Shepard, were partly blamed for Wilson's hospitalisation.

However, Hudson insists they are still close - and she will always be fond of Wilson, who is now well on the road to recovery.

She says: "Owen is such a lovely person, and I love him dearly. And I wish him beautiful things - health and everything that he desires in life."
